Look and Feel

Chromecast with Google TV comes in a compact form factor, which is similar to previous generations. The dimensions are 6.4 x 2.4 x 0.5 inches, and it provides customers 3 colors to select, which are cool new Snow, Sunrise, and Sky colors. There is also an HDMI cable hanging and a USB-C port for a charge. The design not only looks very eye-catching but also is easier to adapt to connect any model of TV as long as it has an HDMI port.

On the other side, The Fire TV Stick 4K comes in a much more compact size, it looks like a portable USB drive. Dimensions of the Fire TV Stick 4K are  3.9 x 1.2 x 0.6 inches, but it only provides one color, which is Black color. Amazon’s TV stick is much smaller, but it’s thicker, so it may block the other ports on your TV HDMI area, which depends on your TV HDMI area design.

Setup

When coming into the streaming video player setup, it might be a nightmare or be quick and painless to somebody, it really depends.

Both devices plug into your television or monitor’s HDMI port, with power provided via a USB cable and power adaptor. The Chromecast with Google TV has an attached cable that makes it easier to plug its HDMI connector into tight spaces

However, to get started with the Amazon TV Fire Stick 4K, you’ll need to create or login into an existing Amazon account. All of this is done via an on-screen keypad and the device’s included remote, which can take some time honestly.

On the other hand, Chromecast with Google TV offers setup through an on-screen QR code, which allows you to set the device up entirely from your smartphone, as long as you have the Google Home app installed and a Gmail account. In particular, if you are an Android user, you would find the same process to be much easier on Chromecast with Google TV, because all of the streaming logins, such as Netflix, Disney plus, etc, can be already backed up to your Google account via Chrome.

Being said that luckily Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K and Chromecast with Google TV are luckily easy and straightforward to set up. If you ask my personal experience, I would say the new generation Chromecast has the edge when it comes to ease of setup, thanks to its compatibility.

Specification

As you can see from the specification table, most are the same thing, although the design and RAM are different, which seems Amazon Fire TV stick 4K might run less smoothly than Google TV, from my personal experience, I don’t think so due to less RAM.

Accessible Content Apps

The Chromecast with Google TV has a big upgrade when compared with previous Chromecast devices. Now, it supports more than 6,500 Android TV content apps already available in the Google Play Store. That includes the usual big names like Netflix, Hulu, Disney Plus, Amazon Prime Video, Spotify, Apple TV, Peloton.

All of those content Apps are also available on Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K, which includes HBO Max App. So from my perspective, now in terms of mainstreaming video content, I can’t see they have differences. Perhaps it might have in the future.

Video Quality – 4K/HDR Streaming

In terms of low price point, both devices are actually quite remarkable, because both are able to offer Dolby Atmos capability, alongside standard HDR10 and HDR+ support. However, Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K provides a deeper, more immersive sound.

When we talk about 4K, we’ve got a really similar pair of streaming devices here. Both devices 4K streams can be up to 4K UHD at 60 fps, and both support Dolby Vision, HDR 10, and HDR10+ formats, for stronger and bolder colors.

Remote Control

The remote control is indeed a big addition to the new Chromecast with Google TV. Google’s new remote features YouTube & Netflix buttons, volume controls, and a dedicated Google Assistant button that will help you find something to watch by voice control. The assistant can also answer questions and also control smart devices.

On the other hand, the Fire TV Stick 4K has a remote control that doesn’t have any OTT shortcut buttons. However, it has a smart assistant button to bring up Alexa, volume rockers, and a mute button, and also works as a universal remote control for your TV and soundbar.

Price

The new Chromecast with Google TV price is US$49.99, which is the same as the Fire TV Stick 4K. But if you’re a regular buyer in the smart home device category, you would agree with me Amazon offers more frequent discounts than Google in different channels. I want to upgrade my existing TV stick and can wait a little bit longer.

Winner: Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K

Verdict

From my point of view, they are very similar, although they might have some minor differences. So if you are a totally new player in this type of product, I’ll suggest you start with Chromecast with Google TV, because the compatibility is better than Amazon’s product. Being said that, if you are already using Amazon ecosystem smart home products, Fire TV Stick 4k absolute can be the best option for you.
