Maya Lin Explores Natures Subterranean Activity with NFT

In 2021, Maya Lin planted 49 Atlantic white cedar trees in Manhattan’s Madison Square Park as part of her project Ghost Forest. The project was a symbol of the power of the natural world and a reminder of its precarity in the face of climate calamity. Now, she is going one step further to visualize her trees’ subterranean behavior-and she’s turning to the world of NFTs for the first time to do it.

In June, Lin will release “The Secret Life of Trees,” a series of generative art NFTs that recreate, through complex algorithms, the organic growth patterns of root systems underground. The series, alongside projects by Trevor Paglen and John Gerrard, will be released by Pace Verso and Art Blocks. Each NFT will take the form of little seeds which will quickly transform into unique multi-stemmed organisms with differing colors.

Trevor Paglen’s “PRELUDES”will be released on April 5th, while his new speculative reality work CYCLOPS will be revealed a little more than a month later in his dedicated exhibition at Pace’s New York gallery. His digital creations combine graphic visuals with music inspired by composers like John Cage and Iannis Xenakis who experimented with algorithms in their own work.

Also on the docket for Pace Verso is a new series of 195 unique NFTs by John Gerrard titled “World Flag.” Each depicts a different nation’s flag in a desert setting and relates to his previous two NFT efforts including his 2022 project “Petro National” which was among the first artworks released through Pace Verso’s partnership with Art Blocks.

By utilizing cutting edge technology such as NFTs, artists like Maya Lin are able to explore nature in ways that were not possible before. Through this innovative approach they are able to create works that bring attention to climate change and its effects on our planet.

With projects from Maya Lin, Trevor Paglen and John Gerrard being released this spring and summer through Pace Verso and Art Blocks we have an opportunity to witness some truly remarkable artwork that shines light on both our environment and technological advances alike. Final Thought: Technology provides us with an exciting platform for exploring art while also allowing us to reflect on our current environmental situation – making these upcoming releases from Pace Verso all the more special!
